What is DTF / Heat Press Printing?

Direct-To-Film (DTF) printing is a garment decoration method that transfers a printed design from a specialized film onto fabric using heat and pressure. Instead of printing the design directly onto the garment like traditional screen printing, the artwork is first printed onto a specialized high-definition transfer film. The film is then applied to the garment with a heat press, creating a vibrant and long-lasting printed design on the finished piece.

DTF transfers are especially useful for detailed or photo-realistic artwork, logos 6+ colors or gradients, and graphics that may not be a natural fit for traditional screen printing. It is also a great choice for personalizing jerseys with individual names or numbers. The best approach for your project depends on your design, garment, and order quantity.

Not sure which decoration method is right for your project? Screen printing creates a printed finish directly on the fabric for logos or designs with five colors or less, while embroidery adds a stitched, dimensional look. Heat press is often a good option for smaller quantities, individual personalization, or complex artwork and gradient designs. Fill out our standard screen printing quote, and we’ll help you choose the best application for your garments, design, and order.

  • You want a classic, raised-texture logo on polos, hats, or professional workwear.

What is DTF printing?

Direct-To-Film (DTF) printing is a garment decoration method that transfers a high-def printed design from a specialized film onto fabric using heat and pressure. It works really well for reproducing photo-realistic or complex gradient designs on a variety of garments, and also for individually personalizing garments like jerseys.

How is DTF printing different from screen printing?

Instead of printing the design directly onto the garment with inks through stenciled screens like traditional screen printing, the artwork is first printed onto a specialized transfer film using a high-definition CMYK printer. The film is then applied to the garment with a heat press, creating a vibrant and long-lasting printed design on the finished piece.

DTF is better suited for designs that feature a lot of colors, complex shading or highlights, or photorealism.

How many shirts do I need to order?

Our DTF/heat press minimum is 10 pieces. From there, we can handle orders anywhere from 10 to 10,000+!

How long will my heat pressed order take?

We strive to get every order printed and shipped within two weeks from quote approval.

Can I bring in my own garments for you to heat press?

We no longer accept customer-provided garments in order to maintain speedy timelines and consistent, accurate, and organized quality-control practices in our shop.

If you have an account with SanMar and have secured unique pricing for your business, please share this with us and we will be happy to price match our garments as a courtesy.

Are DTF transfers durable?

Absolutely. DTF transfers and heat pressed designs are very durable when applied with proper heat and pressure. They offer a similar longevity as traditional screen printing when washed and cared for appropriately.

How should I wash heat pressed garments?

Here are some tips on how to wash a heat pressed garment:

  1. Turn garment inside out. This helps protect the transfer from friction and abrasion.
  2. Wash using cold to warm gentle cycle. Using too hot of water can wear on the print over time.
  3. Use mild detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh chemicals.
  4. Tumble dry low. Too high of heat can wear on the print over time.
  5. Do not dry clean. Solvents can damage the transfer.
  6. Do not iron directly on transfer. If ironing is needed, you can place parchment paper or a clean cloth over the print.

What types of garments can you decorate with DTF transfers?

Virtually any garment can be decorated with DTF transfers except those that are very heat sensitive and might melt or warp when being pressed, like nylon, satin, or acrylic/knitwear sweaters.

The most popular garments to DTF print on are cotton or cotton blend shirts and hoodies, sportswear jerseys and activewear, and canvas accessories like tote bags.  All of these garments are very heat-stable, and move and stretch well without cracking transferred prints.

Can DTF transfers reproduce full-color designs?

Absolutely. It’s what they are made for. Being the design is first printed using a high-definition CMYK printer, full-color gradients and photorealistic details are captured and reproduced incredibly well.

How much does a DTF/heat press order cost?

Heat press pricing depends on several factors, including the number of garments ordered, the size of your design, the number of print locations, and the type of garment you choose. Name personalization starts at $10, and number personalization starts at $8. For more information and starting costs, view our Pricing Guide here.

Will I get a digital proof before my order gets sent to print?

Yes! Once you agree to move forward with your official quote, our designer will send you a digital mockup for approval or feedback before we begin production.

We can provide a mockup prior to official quote approval for an additional fee.

Can I order a sample before placing a larger order?

While we usually do not offer decorated sample, we do provide the opportunity to order a blank (undecorated) garment sample to ensure you are happy with the quality and fit of the garment before placing your order. We offer this at a discounted rate and the sample can then be applied toward your bulk order.
